Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Audio Interface
The Scarlett 18i8 is a sleek USB2.0 audio interface with high quality audio performance. It's aluminium case holds an array of input and output connectivity along with ADAT expandability, 24bit processing, versatile mixing capabilities with the included Scarlett Mixcontrol and super low latency. It's perfect blend of a high number of ins/outs, expandability, reliability and portability make it as good in the home studio as it is recording a full live band.

The Ins & Outs
The Scarlett 18i8 interface has a large number of inputs and outputs and is even expandable for those who need more. On the front panel are 4x TRS combo inputs for use with TRS jack or XLR connections. Each input has its own gain control with 'Halo' LED input signal metering. The unique halo system changes colour depending on the signal level and will go red if you are overdriving the input to make sure you get the best audio input signal level before you even start recording. Each of these inputs is also coupled to a award winning mic pre-amp. That means 4 mic pre-amps on the front panel alone which is great for studio and even some live recording work.
If that isn't enough then there are 4 more TRS Jack connection inputs on the rear panel of the Scarlett 1818 for further live input recording. The rear panel is also equipped with MIDI In/ Out 5 pin din for connecting MIDI and controller instruments. Along with this is the Optical Expansion port. With the addition of something like the focusrite Octopre MKII Dynamic, users can expand their award winning mic input stage by a further 8 inputs making 12 total mic pre inputs available simultaneously. That is more than enough for recoding a live band including drums, keys, guitar, bass and more!
Focusrite have given the scarlett 18i8 a few more ins and out by utilising the mix control software. For example, it is possible to route audio from the internet straight into your software for recording/ sampling. This feature is called loopback and is a welcomed addition for those who like to source audio samples live from the web.
Outputs are supplied in the form of 2 TRS monitor outs, 2x headphone outs with independent controls, and stereo SPDIF. A large master volume dial on the front panel offers accurate control of volume levels. The Scarlett 18i8 can also handle 16 channels of MIDI data with the MIDI connections on the rear panel.
Low Latency, Direct Monitoring
Latency is a delay that occurs due to the processing time of audio by the computers. When you have bad latency there is a distinct delay between the audio going in and the audio you hear at the output. this can be very of putting when playing live and monitoring yourself. A quality audio interface like the focusrite scarlett interface helps reduce this latency by easing the strain on the computer systems but sometimes even that is not enough. In order to combat the problem Focusrite have added a Direct Monitor option in the mixcontrol software. What this does is allows the player to monitor themselves directly from the input signal without waiting for the signal delay back from the computer. This means zero latency yet the computer is still recording the performance.
Bundled With Software
Scarlett 18i8 comes bundled with software ready for use out of the box. Software includes Scarlett mix control software which controls the hardware routing capabilities and has a super low latency of just 1.4ms. Other software includes Scarlett Plug-in Suite (Compression, Gating, EQ and Reverb for tracking and mixing), Ableton Live Lite, Loopmasters sample content and the Novation Bass Station analogue modelling synth plug-in.
With Ableton Live Lite users will be able to record their audio and MIDI data in multi-track format. With on screen audio and MIDI editing, song composition and creation is made easy. Ableton is also packed with effects for processing with the instruments. i.e. add distortion to a guitar or reverb and delay to vocals. With such flexibility it will no take long to create your musical masterpiece. USe samples from the included loopmasters sample library to use in Ableton's session mode whlch allows you to perform live by triggering a grid of sample in realtime like a DJ would.
