Boss suggest using a compressor ahead of the OC-3 to deliver a smoother, more consistent input level. Employing the neck pickup should further assist tracking accuracy, likewise using humbuckers in preference to single-coil pickups, as the former provide a fatter signal. The distortion induced by the Drive control isn't meant to be authentically valve-like; it's there to roughen up the direct and octave signals, enhancing the overall effect.
